Introduction

Hello, my name is [Name] and I'm a Local Listener with People's Powerhouse.

People's Powerhouse is a community organisation that brings people together across the North to listen, share lived experiences and strengthen local voices. This conversation is part of our Coast-to-Coast project, where we're hearing directly from communities about what everyday life is really like and what matters most.

My role is simply to listen and create a safe, respectful space for you to speak openly. This isn't a consultation or a test - it's a chance to share your experiences in your own words.

I'll be audio recording this conversation so we can accurately capture what you say. The recording will be transcribed, anonymised and securely stored. Your name won't be used in any reports unless you ask to be identified.

Taking part is completely voluntary. You can skip any question or stop at any time.

Before we begin, are you happy for this conversation to be recorded and for your anonymised responses to be used as part of the Coast-to-Coast project?

GDPR Consent - state each of these clearly

Identity & Purpose: "This conversation is part of the Coast-to-Coast project run by People's Powerhouse. We are gathering insight about everyday life and local decision-making to inform reports and share anonymised themes with local leaders."
Audio Recording: "This conversation will be audio recorded so we can accurately capture what you say. The recording will be transcribed, anonymised, and then securely deleted."
Anonymised Use: "Your name will not appear in any report unless you explicitly ask to be identified."
Voluntary Participation: "Taking part is completely voluntary. You can skip any question, stop at any time, or withdraw your consent later."
Safeguarding Exception: "Everything you share will be treated confidentially, unless you tell us something that suggests someone is at serious risk of harm, in which case we may need to pass that on."

Then ask each question and record the answer

"Do you understand how your information will be used?"
"Are you happy for this conversation to be audio recorded?"
"Do you consent to your anonymised responses being used in reports and shared with leaders?"

You need clear verbal "Yes" responses on the recording. That creates your audit trail of explicit consent. Do not proceed without three clear, audible "yes" responses.

The Olympics

We have been asked by your Combined Authority to speak to you about their plan to bring the Summer Olympics to the North in 2036/2040.

What would it mean to you personally if the Olympics came to the North of England?
What do you think the North has that no other part of the UK could offer an Olympics?
How do you think an Olympics could connect young people in the North to sport and ambition?
Where do you imagine yourself during the Games? Involved, watching, celebrating? Or somewhere else entirely?

Listener tips

Listen more than you talk
Ask follow-up questions! Who/Why/What/Where/How?
Don't lead - follow their thread
Silence is okay - give them space to think
Ask "what do you mean by that?" to go deeper
Avoid yes/no questions
Thank them sincerely at the end

Safeguarding Reference

If the conversation moves into sensitive territory, keep these principles in mind.

During the conversation

Stay calm and non-judgemental - don't show alarm or urgency
Listen and acknowledge - don't press for more detail than they offer
Do not promise confidentiality - explain you may need to share concerns
Avoid leading questions or suggesting details they haven't mentioned

After the conversation

Flag the wellbeing concern on the submission form before submitting
Record only what was said - use their words, not your interpretation
Report to your designated safeguarding lead as soon as possible
Look after yourself - speak to someone if you feel affected
