Why we do this

What we believe

People's Powerhouse exists to bring the North together to talk about the North. That only works if the people who have the most to say can actually get through the door.

A room is only as good as who is in it

If the only people who can reach an event are the people who can absorb the fare, we end up having a conversation about communities instead of with them. Paying someone's travel is not a nice extra. It is the difference between the two.

We won't ask you to prove you're struggling

There is no means test, no paperwork and no questions about your finances. You know your own circumstances far better than a form does. Tell us what you need and we will take you at your word.

The ticket is rarely the whole cost

Being somewhere can mean a train, a night away, childcare, a carer's time, a meal, or a taxi at the end of the day. We would much rather cover what it genuinely takes for you to be there than half of it.

Asking is not a favour

This money is set aside for exactly this purpose. Using it is the point of it. Nobody on our side thinks less of anyone for asking, and your request is seen only by the small team who handle them.

A person reads it

Not a scoring system. We aim to come back to you within a week, and always before the event.

We sort the money out with you

We'll get in touch directly to arrange it, whether that means booking something for you or paying you back. We never ask for bank details on this form.

You come along

That's it. You are there as a participant like anyone else, and nobody in the room knows how you got there.

The fund is limited, so we can't always say yes to everything, and we may sometimes offer part of what you've asked for. If we can't help this time, do ask again another time.
